What is the ketogenic diet? Learn about its benefits

Have you ever heard the term ketogenic? We are interested in losing weight, and this diet is on the list of those that reduce weight quickly.

It is a diet based on consuming natural foods low in carbohydrates and sugars but rich in fats and proteins. You’re probably wondering, how can a diet be effective if you’re still eating fat?

Well, that’s what it’s all about, producing energy from fat, known as ketone, hence the precedence of the name “ketogenic or keto diet”.

It is a diet that brings health benefits; it helps regulate some pathologies generated by the lack of control of sugar in the blood, such as diabetes. At the same time, the person achieves the desired physical appearance without having to stop eating.

Although it has become popular in recent years, it is a diet that has been used for more than 100 years, but under another name or principles.

However, nowadays, it has increased its popularity since many artists and well-known people have implemented it, obtaining excellent results quickly, although nutritionists and doctors do not recommend it due to its rebound effects.

What does ketogenic mean?

To understand the terminology, one must understand where it is extracted and how it works with ketone.

Ketogenic is a chemical process the body goes through to consume energy from fat, the molecules that are released are called ketones hence the name ketogenic.

How does the ketogenic or keto diet work?

A Keto diet is based on knowing what fuel is best to have in your body for energy and at the same time reducing body fat and measurements without having to go on extreme diets where the person is always hungry.

Sugar found in carbohydrates such as bread, pasta, rice, potatoes, among others. They represent a fuel source for the body, but it is not the only way to obtain energy.

The other fuel is fat, and this diet is low in carbohydrates but high in fat. This means that the body has to use only fat instead of the sugar found in carbohydrates.

Fat consumed is mainly from meat, eggs, butter, nuts, avocado and olive oil.

When the body runs out of sugar, the liver converts the fat into energy molecules known as ketones, hence using this name for the ketogenic diet.

Origin of the ketogenic diet

Its origin can be traced back some 30 years, but in reality, the first person to put this diet into practice was Hippocrates, although he used it only as a fasting diet to treat epilepsy problems.

But at the time, it was not well regarded, so it was not implemented until 1797 when John Rollo tested some soldiers who have diabetes.

A female officer who was obese was subjected to this diet and began to lose weight and see improvements in her body.

Elliot Joslin also carried out studies based on the principles of this ketogenic diet, from which he obtained favourable results.

This practice continued to be implemented mainly in patients with diabetes, which was of great help. However, the discovery and implementation of insulin for patients with diabetes proved to be a great relief.

What foods to eat?

To follow a ketogenic diet, you should eat foods low in carbohydrates and sugar, so you should increase your intake of vegetables, greens and meats.
